Piling contractors for Liverpool and Merseyside — from Victorian terraces in Anfield and Wavertree to dockland regeneration plots, our rigs handle the made ground this city is famous for.
Liverpool ground: what you're building on
Liverpool stands on Sherwood sandstone — famously strong where it comes close to the surface, which is why the city's cathedrals sit where they do. But between the bedrock and your foundations lies the real story: boulder clay of very variable quality, and some of the deepest made ground in the North West. Two centuries of docks, warehouses, terraced streets built, cleared and rebuilt, and wartime bomb damage have left much of the city on fill of unknown depth and content.
Made ground is the piling trigger here: it settles under new load, and no building inspector will accept strip footings on it. Piles taken through the fill — to the clay where it is sound, or to rockhead where it is not — are the standard answer across the city.
What we do across Merseyside
- Mini piling for extensions across the city's terraced and semi-detached streets — with restricted access rigs for rear yards reached through entries.
- Low-vibration augered piles that protect shared party walls — essential on terraces.
- Driven piling on cleared and brownfield plots, where zero spoil keeps contaminated-land costs down.
- CFA piling for residential and commercial development from the Baltic Triangle to the waterfront.
- Underpinning for period properties with settlement over old fill and leaking Victorian drains.

Why does so much of Liverpool need piled foundations?
Large areas of the city sit on made ground - infilled docks, cleared terraces and industrial land - over boulder clay and sandstone. Made ground settles unpredictably, so new loads often need piles taken down to something dependable.
Can you work on Liverpool's Victorian terraces?
Yes. Restricted access rigs handle rear yards and passageways, and low-vibration augered piles protect the shared party walls that driven methods could disturb.
Do you cover the whole of Merseyside?
We do - Liverpool, Bootle, Crosby, Kirkby, Huyton, Prescot, St Helens, Birkenhead and the Wirral are all regular patches for our Merseyside teams.
