How driven piling works
Steel tubes or sections are hammered into the ground until they reach a "set" — a measured resistance that confirms the pile can carry its design load. The ground is displaced rather than removed, which strengthens the soil around the pile and leaves no spoil to cart away. That is a real saving on contaminated or brownfield sites, where muck-away costs bite.
Top driven vs bottom driven
The hammer strikes the head of the pile at ground level. Fast and powerful — the choice for open commercial sites with bigger loads.
A drop hammer works inside the steel tube, driving it from the base. The rig is compact and quieter, making this the favourite driven method for domestic plots.
Where driven piles excel
- Soft, wet or collapsing ground where an open bore would fail — river valleys, mossland and reclaimed land.
- Contaminated and brownfield sites, because no spoil comes out of the ground.
- Sites needing quick, predictable programmes: drive, set, done.
- Projects where proof of capacity on every pile is wanted without waiting for test results.
Noise, vibration and neighbours
Driven piling is noisier than augered methods — we are straight about that. Modern bottom driven rigs are far quieter than the old image of piling suggests, but where structures sit very close, are fragile, or the street is sensitive, we will often recommend switching to augered mini piles or CFA instead. The right method for the site, not the rig on the yard.
Typical uses across the North West
Bottom driven piles carry a large share of the region's domestic extension work, especially on the soft alluvium around Warrington, Preston and the Mersey towns. Top driven steel piles serve portal frames, agricultural buildings and infrastructure. Working loads run from around 50kN per pile on light domestic schemes to several hundred kN on commercial sections.

What is the difference between top driven and bottom driven piles?
